Shipping patterns and mortality in the African slave trade to Rio de Janeiro, 1825-1830.

چکیده

Résumé H. S. Klein et S. L. Engerman — Frets et mortalité dans la traite négrière vers Rio de Janeiro, 1825-1830. Une analyse systématique des documents maritimes et commerciaux pour cette période permet d'établir non seulement les points d'origine des esclaves et leur importance numérique relative, mais encore la mortalité en cours de route. Par rapport à la situation à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, l'importance de l'Afrique orientale comme source d'approvisionnement a considérablement augmenté, de même que la capacité moyenne des navires en provenance d'Afrique orientale. La mortalité — bien que particulièrement élevée sur les navires en provenance du Mozambique — est tombée de 9,5 à 7,1 %. Elle semble liée à la fois à la durée du trajet, aux conditions climatiques et, pour l'Afrique occidentale, à l'origine des esclaves. Les matériaux disponibles ne suffisent cependant pas à une étude approfondie de la rentabilité de la traite.
